What makes a word search an adult puzzle
Two things, and neither is the word “adult” on the cover: the subject matter and the resistance. Every puzzle above is a 16 × 16 board drawn from themes that assume some general knowledge — Silk Road trade routes, physical geography, oceanography, units of measure — with fourteen to eighteen words hidden in all eight directions, reversals included. The filler letters are seeded from the hidden words themselves, so the near misses are constant and finishing one takes a genuine fifteen minutes.
Play them free in the browser with a timer, or print any of them: the grid and word list go on one page and the answer key prints separately, which is what makes these popular with book clubs, waiting rooms, and activity coordinators. If you want the same challenge across the whole library rather than this curated slice, the hard difficulty page lists every 16 × 16 board we publish. And if the appeal is comfort rather than challenge — bigger letters, shorter lists, no diagonals — that is a different puzzle entirely: see large print word searches.
